This story is about the first time we do a design project with no benefit.

Koto is a vocational school for young people who are in difficult circumstances, training completely free in 2 years and give you the opportunity to live a different life. You can learn more about Koto at: www.koto.com.au

That afternoon, Mr. J, founder of the Koto, is also a very special friend of mine, set at an appointment in a café. He said that he was preparing to reopen KOTO Saigon after being closed for 2 years because of shortage in funds and he can only maintain one branch in Hanoi. He told us about Koto, including how he did not have much budget for the remodel, but he still wants his students to be happy on the opening day, and he asked if I could help him renewing the school on the first day of the school year without using too much time and costs. We shook hands, and I accepted.

Thick clinging dirt, the marks of time flowing, electrical system failure, dilapidated furniture, the walls were discoloured. We only have 10 days to work properly. I suggest repainting all the rooms, repair damaged bulbs, change some tables and chairs, and most importantly, completely changed the facade and main lobby (formerly the parking space). The main hall will be a place to welcome visitors, investors, benefactors, and a place for students to join in and have fun.

The problem is that we don’t have much time so we’re required to find the best solutions for the renovation.

Shortly before that, we spent a lot of time researching a project, which is constructed entirely of corrugated material on the iron frame (sure many people know we're referring to which schemes), the solution is selected by high feasibility, short construction time and very inexpensive. We also take this opportunity to test a very interesting new material, as an "extra profit" add a personal study. Finally, combined with inspiration from the colors on the Koto logo, the design rapidly completed.
And the construction part has been done so fast as well.

The most interesting highlight is the colorful canvas panels painted entirely by KOTO students' hands. We spent an afternoon at their school when the bus has not arrived, to mix colors and then spray our creation on the white canvas frames, before reorganization and hang them up to complete the work. It was an afternoon full of fun and laughter that surely none of us will forget.

For us, there is always a very special nexus between the architect and the user works, and the work itself is the source of all story. As in this case, we told you about the story of these young people in Koto was the one who contributed to the renovation of the school. The youth will tell their stories for the school visitors, the juniors enrolling in the following courses.

We believe, the reason a project exists is to become a place to preserve stories.
