Residential Architecture

The thing we love most about finishing a project is the friendship after it. It all starts with a phone call from an unknown number, a message from social media and end as friends in real life. It’s interesting to see the project continue living its life and the clients and us maintaining a relationship outside of work.

So that one day, maybe over a year with this project for instance, we come back to see our project, take care of it a little, planta few trees, take a couple of photos to post on FB and share its story.

We think, architecture (or whatever words that describe the making of a living space), and friendship are basically like wine. The longer the tastier.

And this place, we call it a hiding place.

Located on the 4th floor of an old building, which has 8 floors, 2 blocks, isolated in a well protected, restricted area. The whole building doesn’t really belong to any groups or organizations. Each apartment was completely sold for an owner, just like a building of houses, forming a small community of people who want to live privately and separately right in the center of the city.

I feel the need to talk about this unique aspect because even though the building is really old and there are signs of decadent, the apartment is the perfect renovation project. It provides enough liberty for the owner to show their personality but still keeps the same base structure with the rest of the apartments.

Our job as usual, is to start removing the partition walls in order to enlarge the space and at the same time, analyzing the remain problems of the apartment.

There are 3 disarranged bedrooms with a toilet right at the front door for the 2 smaller rooms. The elevator took a spot next to the main door, dividing the rest of the space into the living and kitchen area. There was a small balcony absurdly taking all the space in the living room, making the corner of the apartment so cramped and sunless. As we entering the house for the inspection, it feels as though we were travel back to the 90s of Saigon, to the old wretched buildings of that time.

Our most important decision is to relocate the kitchen, replace it with a bedroom. We intentionally want to create an open space so that when entering the house, you can see right to the wall across without being blocked by any partition walls. All the bedrooms are discreetly placed and hidden by the partition wall, creating the privacy needed without having to use any doors.

The relocation of the kitchen also helps us to now put it inside a garden, instead of some narrow corners. We have a special interest in the kitchen space, which is a long story for another time. But we definitely want the people who live here and want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen can truly enjoy and feel comfortable in it.

The next important decision is to engage in a “battle” with the people in the building for us to be able to remove a side of the apartment to put in it a flowerpot as a curtain, separate the living room with the space outside.

Laying the sketch to the table, we notice the apartment has a square shape, however the way they poorly arrange the elevator, the toilets and the balcony made it disorganized. By analyzing and removing all the details to minimal,  finally we have found a solution for the apartment, giving it a tidy and open space.

The original inspiration for the apartment is the cubes. We consider the elevator a cube, the balcony’s a cube (which later on we turn it into a bar next to the garden), the toilet and the storage room’s a cube and all the bedrooms are cubes.. Then we decide on the materials and put everything in a virtual space. The results are truly special.

The elevator cube is now a bookcase, and the space behind the wall for the elevator no longer makes people wonder about its existence.

The balcony was a rare open space of the apartment is now being transformed into a “green box”. The green box hides all the water supply system and even the fridge. The inside of the green box is made with mirror to create an illusion of a larger space. The green box is not only the highlight of the living room but also a bar so that the people can work or talk to each other there. It’s lighten up in the evening like an aquarium planted tank.

The toilet area in front of the main door is narrowed, adding a storage to cover it. The wall is cladded with burnt wood, giving it astrong and deep impression, making it the fulcrum for the dining table.

The bedrooms are built with glass-bricks, the 5mm steel window frame, the hallway lies aside the apartment leads to the washing area, which is also the way for ventilation. When the owner is in the bedroom, the light is lit up behind the glass-brick. It’s lighten up the space outside, also indicate that’s someone is in which bedrooms without having to knock. The semi-transparency of the glass bricks preserves the privacy of the bedrooms but at the same time, still creating a “link” between the people in the family, who are young and like to enjoy themselves in a private space.

There are more to the story of the making of this project. The long period of time has given us the opportunity to put everything in consideration and giving it the most care. Most of the furniture are drawn then custom made, reducing the buying. Slowly, the apartment transforms itself to an interesting hiding place in the center of the city.

“The hiding place” is probably the most accurate way to express it. A home where the people can return to after a long day in the outside world. It’s also a place where we “store” our friendship. We sometime get to “hide” here too, talking and looking to the outside world and just enjoy a cup of coffee.
